Top Hostage Negotiator Joins the TRIP Group

The Travel Risk & Incident Prevention (TRIP) Group this week announced the appointment of Sue Williams QPM to their expert advisory board.  Sue is an experienced and internationally renowned hostage negotiator and as a senior London detective, she was the Officer in Charge of both the Kidnap and the Hostage Crisis Negotiation Units at Scotland Yard.

At the highest-level, Sue has been an active contributor to the UK Government’s crisis response process in cases of kidnap or abduction overseas. She has regularly advised senior ministers as part of the Cabinet Office Briefings (COBRA), the government’s crisis management structure and continues to advise numerous overseas governments. 

Speaking of the appointment, Chief Executive of the TRIP Group, Lloyd Figgins said, “Sue is a wonderful addition to our expert advisory board. The purpose of the board is to provide our members with access to genuine expertise in key specialist areas of travel risk management in order to help them operate safely.”

Sue qualified as a hostage negotiator both in the UK with New Scotland Yard and in the USA with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) 29 years ago. Since that time, she has contributed to the successful resolution of hundreds of kidnaps and hostage situations on land and the high seas. More recently, Sue has undertaken cyber negotiations as a tactic for combating extortion.

Mr Figgins went on to say, “Sue brings an unrivalled depth of knowledge and experience that’s genuinely world class and really enhances what we are able to provide our members and partners. Sue’s passion for her subject matter is quite exceptional, so we’re absolutely delighted to have her on the team.”

Sue is a recipient of the Queen’s Police Medal; this was in recognition of her commitment in the fields of kidnap, negotiation and saving of life. She is also an Associate Fellow of the 

Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.
